On the old shipyard grounds by the harbour, Copenhagen's coolest new district has emerged – with the Reffen street food market, a harbour sauna, bars and cultural halls.
A shipyard in transformation
Refshaleøen was once one of the largest shipyards in the world. After it closed, the sprawling harbourside site sat derelict for years – then, over the last few years, turned into what may be Copenhagen's most exciting new district. Old industrial halls now house studios, restaurants, markets and event venues.
Street food, sauna and culture
The big draw is the Reffen street food market, with dozens of stalls from around the world right on the water. Add to that a harbour sauna with a plunge into the cool harbour basin, bars in shipping containers, concert halls and – at the very top of the culinary world – the multi-award-winning restaurant Alchemist.
Rough charm with a water view
Refshaleøen isn't a classic sightseeing stop, but a place to experience: eat, drink, take a dip and soak up the post-industrial atmosphere with a view over the water. If you only have time for one new district in Copenhagen, this is the one many recommend.
