Copenhagen's churches tell the city's history in miniature – from the neoclassical cathedral to the grand buildings of the royal era and the climbable towers that now rank among its finest viewpoints. We introduce eight of them here; most sit close together in the city centre and combine well into a single walking route. For an overview of all of them with location and details, see the grid above.
The most eye-catching place of worship is the Marble Church (Frederiks Kirke), with Scandinavia's largest church dome, opposite Amalienborg Palace. In the historic centre stand the neoclassical Copenhagen Cathedral (Vor Frue Kirke) with Thorvaldsen's Christ figure and row of apostles, the Gothic Helligåndskirken on Strøget, the German congregation's church Sankt Petri with its baroque burial chapels, and the naval church Holmens Kirke opposite Christiansborg, where Queen Margrethe II married in 1967.
For the view, climb the external spiral spire of the Church of Our Saviour in Christianshavn, or the Round Tower, Europe's oldest functioning observatory tower, reached via a gently sloping spiral ramp. The Round Tower is structurally connected to Trinitatis Kirke, once the university church of Christian IV.
The nave is free to enter in all eight buildings. You only pay if you want to climb up or visit a special area:
All prices are for 2026; if in doubt, check the relevant attraction page. Tickets for the tower and dome climbs are mostly sold on site only.
